Magdalena Sarnas born in Poland raised in New Jersey. She would not consider her an artist. She would consider herself a maker. Even prior to the pandemic, Magdalena was taking piece of furniture from garage sales, curb finds, and social media free posts. She has repurposed many tables and used contemporary designs to give them a fresh look. Through this process she has enjoyed recreating items for continued use. It was through local artist Dave LaMorte’s recommendation to participate in Artcycle. Magdalena had an idea to create a piece from left over plastic bag rope she upcycled to help reduce waste. This method was found through researching YouTube to find ways to reduce the number of bags in the house without sending them to the landfill. One foot of rope uses up to 3 bags. The plastic bag rope and various other plastic were incorporated into the piece “Plastic the Material in Our Lives”, to highlight that plastic is woven into our lives. The painted backdrop of the camouflage pattern of the colors of the earth, also speaks to we are hiding behind our intentions to make a world an “Environmentally Safe”. We also live on this earth that is not recognizable from the changes that we have made by creating more waste. Using colors of brown, gray, white, and black for the rope are also naturally occurring colors in the environment that resemble, sand, stone, clouds, and soil. The loom is not perfect and has pieces of clear plastic woven not in a pattern but diagonally cutting through the loom to represent the chaos that this material causes as a juxtaposition against the normal order of the loom. The loom sits on top of the camouflage pattern to represent how much this material that we have created, is truly embedded into our lives, against a backdrop of a world we barely recognize. The Metuchen Artcycle is her first display of an artistic work that expresses her feeling about the environment and to help other reflect on the things around us. Through this piece she hopes to inspire others, to get to zero waste or at the very least reduce our waste, to help maintain the land on this planet.
